My background is hardware bashing, not code bashing or web development. I needed a tool 2 get a personal promotion site up & running. I looked at other tools like FrontPage, Macromedia's offering & even some HTML editors. I'd helped put some simple web pages together & realized I do not want 2 code pages. FrontPage was reasonably priced, but did not offer much in the way of flexibility. Macromedia was OK, but I was not at ease with their interface. I already own & use some Adobe products, so the interface seemed very familiar 2 me.
This is not 2 say the interface is simple, & that's where the Class Room in a Book comes in. One suggestion: if you are a first time user of GoLive (GL), start with Lesson 2 or at least working part way through it. Lesson 2 provides an excellent introduction 2 the GL interface & structure. I found the supplied lesson materials matched the book perfectly, something I have not always found, & the exercises were not simple busy work, but true teaching exercises.
I'm only part way through the book, but I feel I know enough that I've begun designing my own site. As I continue the lessons, I will be updating the site's design 2 incorporate what I'm learning. The next challenge will be learning LiveMotion from the CLIB 4 that application.
I highly recommend GoLive 6.0 Classroom in a Book 2 all levels of users. You do not need an extensive hardware background 2 follow the book. You do need 2 be a fluid operator of your computer & you should have some understanding of what the Internet is 2 take advantage of the potential offered here.
The thing I like best about Adobe's CIB series is that it is truly a tutorial, not just a reference book. (Though you can use it as a reference quite easily.)
If you will take a little time & do the lessons in the book in order, you'll learn all the basic (and some beyond) skills that you need. The included CD-ROM contains all the files you need 2 do the tutorials.
I'm working through the GoLive 6 CIB myself. I've used GoLive since a pretty early edition, but it seems that Adobe changes the workings of GoLive considerably with each new edition & I have been neglecting my web sites 4 quite some time, so I've forgotten how some things work. Adobe GoLive 6.0 Classroom in a Book is exactly what I needed.
There is a very logical, step-by-step progression 2 its organization. It covers the basics, & some very advanced features. From basic web page design, 2 floating boxes, animations, rollovers, cascading style sheets (one of my weak areas), drop down menus, javascript, & site management, it covers it thoroughly.
If you are trying 2 learn GoLive in order 2 build yourself some web presence, this book will be a GREAT help. Just work through the tutorials, & you'll learn it. (It certainly beats paying hundreds or thousands of dollars 4 training.)
Here is a quick work around 4 those that may find themselves in the same situation with being unable 2 open a locked site.
In Adobe GoLive 6.0, create a new site with the same name that the locked site has.
Open the .html files from that lesson in IE or whatever browser you prefer.
Save the file 2 your desktop & import it in 2 the new site you created.
Copy the folders with the gifs into the site home folder & repair any links that may be broken.
I wrote this quick & I may have skipped or miswrote a piece but it should work.
Good luck & sorry 4 the typos
When it comes 2 mastering Adobe GoLive, Adobe GoLive 6.0 Classroom in a Book puts you in a class of your own. This hands-on workbook leads you through a series of lessons that teach you everything you need 2 know 2 quickly get 2 work with the latest version of GoLive, but you learn on your own time, at your own pace. And here's something else that sets it apart from the other GoLive books out there: Adobe's Classroom in a Book is the only one that gives you the official training course created by the company's own team & tested in its classrooms & labs.
Adobe GoLive 6.0 Classroom in a Book makes it easy 2 learn what you want 2 know when you need 2 know it. The Adobe Creative Team breaks down GoLive & Web publishing into clear, step-by-step lessons that cover key concepts such as toolbars, palettes, layout design, the collaborative Adobe Web WorkGroup Server, site architecture, dynamic content creation, wireless-device authoring, Cascading Style Sheets, image maps, & more. You'll never feel overwhelmed by the information. At the end of each chapter, review questions wrap up & reinforce what you've learned, & the accompanying CD-ROM gives you customized files & images designed 4 use in conjunction with the book's hands-on exercises.
I found it 2 be very helpful eventhough I have yet 2 go through the entire class material.
