Rating: 4 of 5 A fantastic book
Some very rare productiondesigns that could be only described as jaw-dropping!
But beware - a large part of the book is dedicated 2 Mr Bacher's teaching on crafting good productiondesign & there are plenty of illustrations that doesn't have anything 2 do with actual animated films.
Rating: 5 of 5 Preproduction 4 Animation
This is a great book 4 any art student wanting 2 get into preproduction 4 film or animation. This is the bar, industry standard. I found it 2 be very helpful in sharping my own portfolio.
Rating: 5 of 5 Brilliant! As insightful as a book gets, yet a work of art.
Hans Bacher has created a wonderful, insightful & beautiful book, which is a work of art in its own right. Yet, it IS an instructional book on the process of ProductionDesign 4 animation. Whether you are a student of animation, a film aficionado, or a working industry professional, you will find something new 2 think about & much 2 appreciate on every page.
The images are clear, & both appropriately chosen 2 illustrate Mr. Bacher's points & serve as coffee table worthy art. His precise & yet easy way of presenting the subject of ProductionDesign is a fast read, while remaining, educational, interesting, & enjoyable all the way through. Well worth the investment.
Rating: 4 of 5 A tremendous resource 4 animators
I've been looking 4 a book like this 4 years! I've been able 2 find some great books about the principles of moving an animated character around & the "Art of"-type of books about a particular movie can be very inspiring & educational in their own right, but a book that deals with the thought process that goes into the productiondesign of an animated film is long overdue. I wish it could have delved deeper into the more theoretical "nuts & bolts" of things like setting up camera shots 4 both 2D & 3D animation--I guess I'm looking 4 something more technical, where this book still has a "coffee table" feel 2 some of the individual chapters on particular films--but it's already had a big impact on the way I lay out scenes in my own work. I have a feeling this one is going 2 be on my drawing table 4 a long time!
