Someone did label the Apple G5 as the "Ferrari of Computing", an apt description.
Driven by a 1.6 GHz Power PC G5 processor, 256 MB PC2700 (333MHz) memory (expandable 2 a gargantuan 4 GB), & an NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra graphics card with 64 MB DDR SDRAM video memory, the Power Mac G5 M9020LL/A certainly seems impressive. But those figures only begin 2 tell the story. For its latest series of high-end desktops, Apple teamed with IBM 2 redesign its leading edge CPU architecture. Accordingly, this system features two very important innovations -- an extremely fast 800 MHz frontside bus & the world's first 64-bit processor. These are critical advancements that not only boost the top-end speed but also prevent bottlenecks along the way.
Yet there's more than raw power lurking inside the Power Mac G5's futuristic anodized aluminum case. For starters, Apple has compartmentalized the unit into four independent sections 2 direct appropriate airflow 2 each key component. A total of nine fans work 2 keep things cool, yet all are extremely low-speed. Thusly the Power Mac G5 M9020LL/A runs three times quieter than the previous Power Mac G4 enclosure.
Apple has loaded the unit with data handling features, including a large 80 GB 7200 RPM hard disk & a DVD-R/CD-RW combo drive (4X DVD write speed) through which you can archive information, play & burn audio CDs, enjoy the latest movies & record home videos. To help you transfer data 2 & from external peripherals such as optical drives & digital camcorders & cameras, the system also sports two high-speed FireWire 400 ports, one ultra-fast FireWire 800 port, three USB 2.0 ports & two USB 1.1 ports.
Other significant amenities include a convenient Apple Pro keyboard, an Apple Pro mouse, three available high-performance PCI-X slots 4 future expansion, & a broad array of multimedia & Internet software. Connectivity facilities include an integrated 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet port, a built-in 56K modem, & AirPort Extreme wireless support (with an AirPort Extreme card). Speakers & display are available separately.
Perhaps the most enjoyable aspect of all -- & one I think outweighs the pain of some missing Windows-only software -- is the fact that Macs don't catch viruses. And malicious "spyware/adware'? Forget about it, those bad guy miniprograms don't run on the Mac. The Internet feels just like it did back in the days before viruses were a plague like they are today...only much faster of course.
In order 2 converse with my Windows-dominated office, I got Microsoft Office 4 Mac (latest version). Many experts think it's better than the Windows version. I think it's a toss-up. Word, Excel, Outlook, typical office stuff all work fine in Windows World. So does online banking with Apple Safari browser -- which is way cooler than Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Best of all, Apple's digital iLife Suite of applications have no competition in the Windows world. Think of iTunes on Windows & think of that 4 digital movies, digital pictures, dvd creation, etc etc. If you know how great iTunes is you know what I'm talking about. Apply that 2 the rest of your digital life & you'll soon realize that computing doesn't get any better than this.
A very happy Apple customer.
