Support the Rise of the Empire!
I was really hesitant 2 get this game after playing "Battlefront I". However, I got a good recommendation 4 it & praise that it was far superior 2 the first. That's pretty much exactly what I wanted 2 hear. "Battlefront I" is really cool in concept, but it was lacking a ton. Co-op was practically useless, too fast, & virtually no story. It was just boring! Luckily just about all these misgivings I had 4 "Battlefront I" were fixed in "Battlefront II".

I'm personally more into co-op based games than the online multiplayer scenarios & when it came 2 purchasing "Battlefront I" I felt like they forgot about the fans that play co-op. Not so with "Battlefront II". My friend & I spent quite a long time playing through this games campaign setting. It was absolutely awesome! Not 2 mention quite challenging at times. Basically you play as part of an elite squad of Storm Troopers called the 501st. You go with them on their campaigns as the growing empire sends them out 2 squash dissidents. It starts off around where "Episode III" leaves off & brings you into parts of "The Empire Strikes Back". It's really interesting because you get 2 see where the empire started 2 make a decisive stranglehold on the various systems we're all familiar with. My favorite part was being able 2 participate in the battle at Hoth from "The Empire Strikes Back". Yes! You get 2 drive an AT-AT, one of my favorite weapons of the Empire! My only disappointment is that I could not fly a Star Destroyer... although I imagine that would be clunky & I would've crashed it into all kinds of things... like planets.

Anyway, the missions are pretty fun 2 play. They're almost way too chaotic at times though. You have defined goals & points 2 conquer in each mission area & you have 2 complete all of them in order 2 move onto the next mission. So in mission one you could be asked 2 defend a location & they have a marker there 4 you 2 stand next to. When you succeed at that objective you get more orders 2 complete another task & so on until that particular mission/campaign is completed. In most cases you have a finite number of troops so if you keep dying & have 2 keep using bodies you will fail the mission. Once you get the hang of it, it's pretty fun. Usually at the start of any new area you're pretty confused until you map it out in your head what you're supposed 2 do & where you're supposed 2 go. One mission that was especially confusing was when you play the part in "A New Hope" as Darth Vader's storm troopers board Leia's ship. At the end you're supposed 2 find Leia, but there's no marker & enemies respawn infinitely, so my friend & I were insanely confused on that level 4 a little while. It was really fun 2 play as Darth Vader though. Anyway, aside from intense amounts of chaos it was really fun & the maps you get 2 explore are huge!

Now judging by my rating you can see there were some things that I didn't like about the game. The chaotic factor in the battles can get 2 you after a while, but I think that's a pretty realistic feature, so my gripe really isn't with that. The worst part of this was the space battles. Luckily it gives you the option 2 skip these, but I would have preferred not to, honestly. The space battles are simply the most confusing thing I've ever come across! They're absolutely insane & I found the ships fairly hard 2 control. I could rarely figure out where I was going half the time. Maybe I just have a natural aversion 2 flight simulator styled games, but I was very lost on these. For another perspective, my friend who actually does like flying games hated this part of the game too. He also got lost & incredibly confused, so I guess it doesn't work like other games of this nature. Other than that the only things I wish I had access 2 were more character options & more access 2 force powers when playing a Jedi. They do give you some options 2 play as different storm troopers, but I think it would've been cool 2 have the option 2 play as various aliens & so forth. Maybe the game was already too big with what little they had so they had 2 limit it.

Anyway, as you can see this is far superior 2 "Battlefront I". If you're thinking about getting a Star Wars game like this, definitely get this one. You won't be disappointed & if there are parts of the campaign you don't want 2 do the game allows you 2 skip them without it hindering your ability 2 complete the full campaign sequence. Of course if you skip it you don't get 2 see the story or cinematic sequences 4 that level. This is also really fun because you play entirely from the Dark Side! If you really liked that part of Star Wars you'll love this. All hail the Empire!

Bringing the battle home...
Battlefront was a great idea. Take all the best battles of the Star Wars movies, & drop players right in the middle where they can team up against each other in squads feel like they're a part of the movies. That game was good. This one is better. Pushing the Xbox about as far as it can go graphically (and even farther on the awesome 360 where resolution is greatly increased), this time around not only do you get 2 be in the battles from Star Wars, you get space battles & play-time as heroes & villains like Luke Skywalker, General Grievous, Han Solo & Princess Leia. And don't forget Darth Vader & Boba Fett.

You can play this game online, but 4 me the real reason I bought it (and bought it again after foolishly selling my copy) is that when you play split-screen on a big screen, there's just nothing like it. With up 2 four people playing at the same time split-screen, you get the instant reactions of your team-mates & the kind of fun that only comes from being in the same room. When I first bought the game a friend & me started playing one night, & ended up staying up until 5 a.m., despite his having 2 catch an early flight that day! Just one more, just one more. And then at about 3 or 4 a.m. we happened upon the campaign mission of the blockade runner from the beginning of A New Hope. We looked at each other & said "It's probably going 2 just be a few guys in the corridor, not like in the movie". Then the mission started, as Imperial Storm Troopers we both ran around the corner...and we were both killed immediately in a gigantic hail of blast-fire & thermal detonators. We re-spawned & again ran around the corner guns ablazing... & we both died immediately again. Some would call it cheap. We thought it was awesome. We kept up our insane assualt, finally making it past that corridor & taking on the rebels throughout the ship. And then my friend had the option of playing as Vader. I watched as he cut through Rebels with his light-saber like a hot knife through warm butter. Yeah, that mission was awesome.

As I've played the game, I've found that many of the missions are almost as great. There's the swamps of Degobah, the rainy exterior of Kamino, & the boiling lava of Mustafa. There's space battles that let you fly a Tie Advanced or hop into a Clone Transport. There's all kinds of awesome units like Dark Troopers (who have a shock gun & a jet pack), Clone Troopers with gattling guns, Bothan Spies, & Droidekas. A lot of units are from the previous game, but they're all great. There's lots of modes 2 play, from the turn-based conquest 2 the Several Campaigns, 2 the great multiplayer modes.

Naturally the controls are perfect, making aiming easy & precise. Of course if you're a PC gamer you'll argue till everyone is asleep from boredom about how lame a console controller is compared 2 a mouse & keyboard, but if you're a hardcore gamer of every system you may reach the opinion of myself & my comrades that it's better 2 play with a wireless controller on a couch than a mouse & keyboard on a desk. I actually have my PC & game systems rigged 2 a 22 inch screen I use 4 everything from watching movies 2 360 games, & still prefer playing with the 360 controller because it's so comfortable & easy 4 me (and I care more about having fun than about getting the high score in a shooter).

Battlefront II might just be the most fun multiplayer game in existance 4 the Xbox with the widest audience. I mean, everyone loves Star Wars. Right?

Just what my son wanted
Frankly, I find this game a little boring, but then I'm not into the shoot 'em up type games. However my son asked 4 this 4 Christmas & he is happy with it, which is why I gave it a 5-star overall rating. I first read other reviews on Amazon, where I learned that in Battlefront II, some of the problems with Battlefront I were resolved & I was glad 4 the advice when I went 2 purchase. What I do like about this game is that you can play split screen so four players can play at once. The programmers did a great job of keeping all four players separate & you can interact with other players while maintaining separate views - its pretty cool.

Great Star Wars immersion
The game provides a very entertaining first person shooter experience. The campaigns are short, well directed & do not involve highly complex maps, so the difficulty level is in the action volume vs. the navigation. The ability 2 use vehicles is a nice feature, but the space battles are bit too difficult 2 control. A fine game 4 a beginner or intermediate gamer. Multiplayer in split screens is quite fun, but less cooperative than in other games.
