I bought my first LaCiedrive 4 years ago. Within 1 year it was doing the dreaded click - "Sorry, I am in a coma now, my memory is gone, & I am as good as dead..." - thing. I asked LaCie, & they said, "We'll send you another..". Which they did. And it promptly died. And it decided very helpfully 2 do this 1 month after the warranty expired..
Apart from all this, I had various software conflicts & 'failure 2 read' issues which were sorted in the end, but after much research & fixing. Not good.
Now, you'd think I would have learned from this wouldn't you? Hmm. I guess I was in 'idiot' mode at the time because, yeah, you guessed it, I ordered another. And you can guess what happened a year later, can't you?
No help from the support desk, either. They just said (rather unbelievably) "Oh.. you ought 2 buy 2drives in future, in case this happens again, then you'll have another back-up.."
Yeah, right. Thanks then.
On a lighter note.. I just ought 2 mention that I have now bought my 5th Western Dig. drive & after nearly 3 years they all work a treat. No conflicts, no problems, no dead drives. Plugged 'em in - & they worked.
LaCie? Useless, don't waste your money.
WD - So far, lovely. I would recommend.

Rating: 1 of 5 Do NOT buy this drive -- high failure rate
Do NOT buy this Laciedrive! I have purchased 4 of these LaCieexternaldrives in the past year (one of them was 2TB in size, the other three were 1TB in size), & all 4 of them have failed a few months after I started using them, resulting in a loss of all the data. There is something systemically very wrong with the design of these drives.
My recommendation: Buy an Iomega Desktop HardDrive instead (also available here on Amazon). After the LaCiedrives failed, I bought three of the Iomega Desktop HardDrives (2TB size), & although I've only been using them about a month, they all work great. They are also cheaper than the LaCiedrives.
Rating: 1 of 5 failed drive..
After 5 months.. the drive failed. No warning signs.. no loud noise.. failed pretty abruptly. Anybody has pointers 4 data recovery.
Rating: 1 of 5 WATCH OUT!
I've had several Lacieexternal FW drives fail on me in the last month or so - a 500GB, a 1TB & a 2TB.
The reason seems 2 be that I may have powered up one Laciedrive with the (identical-looking) power supply from another. It turns out you can't do this & plugging in a Laciedrive with a Lacie power supply from a second drive(even if it's identical spec) can fry it!
Great, huh? I've been told Western Digital & G-Tech are better. Lacies seem really flaky.
Rating: 1 of 5 WORST DRIVES EVER!!!
I think most of the the reviewers have already covered everything faulty about this drive. DO NOT BUY IT!!! I bought two over a year ago, & withing 6 months of being purchased BOTH failed on me at the same time - they kept on clicking & would not mount, & when I did manage 2 mount both [after a good 30 tries], 90% of my data was missing.
I sent them 2 Lacie 2 be repaired, but instead of repairing them they just sent me new ones. And as predicted, they BOTH have failed on me again with the EXACT same problem within 6 months of being sent back 2 me. Now they won't repair them as they are out of warranty. They even had the nerve 2 tell me that I should buy new Laciedrives.
Trust me on this one, Lacie is a horrible company when it comes 2 quality externalharddrives. Save yourself the money & invest in another brand.
