I bought this drive in May, 2007. It was advertised as having a three year warranty, & I have a PDF copy of the Maxtor spec sheet that confirms this model has a three year warranty.
The drive failed in August, 2008, 15 months after purchase. Seagate, which bought Maxtor back in 2006, refuses 2 replace the drive or honor the warranty. They wrote "We have seen this before, & I am sorry 2 say the drive only had a 1-year warranty" -- clearly, the reason they've seen this before is because the drive was marketed as having a three year warranty.
A longer warranty doesn't mean a harddrive is less likely 2 fail. But I would never buy a drive with a one year warranty. And I would never buy from a company that refuses 2 honor its warranties.
That's two good reasons not 2 buy this drive.
Rating: 5 of 5 cheap & fast
I have this on my computer as a second harddrive in IDE mode, may change it 2 raid mode someday. I wanted 2 dual boot with Vista 64 & 32 bit, but haven't. Otherwise, it works fine & is as quite as any other harddrive out there. I had a Maxtor HD failed on me before, but this one is going good.
Rating: 5 of 5 No problems...
Other folks have talked about their harddrive was mishandled in shipping, etc, causing it 2 arrive DOA. I had no problems. I could have taken the Maxtor retail box & punted it off of my roof, retrieved the box, take the brand new harddrive out & put it in with no damage. Make sure you have serial ATA before you get this drive.
Rating: 2 of 5 Not Very Reliable
I have had nothing but trouble with harddrives made by Maxtor & now that they are owned by Seagate it does not appear that they have improved on the quality at all.
I purchased this 500GBSATAIIinternalharddrive last November & it started 2 die in less than 60 days. When you turn on the computer you can hear the drive try 2 start up but that is all it does. I have 2 restart my PC 20 plus times before the drive it will actually start up. Lucky 4 me I was able 2 get it 2 start up & backed up before it died altogether.
I would not recommend anything with a Maxtor name on it 2 anyone. My Western Digital drives have been working just fine & I should have got one but I was tempted by the price of the Maxtor unit. BIG mistake.

This is the first time maxtor has let me down. I always buy maxtor & this drive had let me down. I thought cause its sataII it would be fast well not at all. Secondly after less than a week it crashed. Please don't waste your money on this please don't. The problem started off by freezing during boot up then when ever I play my games they would crash .I have since then bought a new sataIIharddrive 4 less than $60 & guess what it works faster & no problems. It would of been a good harddrive if it would of booted right & not taken forever . I forgot 2 mention it ruined my sli mode.No my pc won't work with sli ,all thanks 2 this aweful harddrive.
