Iomega 33720 FireWire 800/FireWire 400/USB 2.0 1TB 2HD x 500GB UltraMax Hard Drive

Steer away from this unreliable hard drive. Mine lasted about 8 months & was replaced under warranty with a reconditioned drive. That one lasted about 3 month. I was difficult navigating the website & finding an email address 2 correspond with. When there was a response, I was told too bad, sorry. Never again will I deal with Iomega.

I use this drive 4 my media library, & so far, it's worked great. It take s few seconds 2 spin up 2 speed, but outside of that, it functions great.

I have two of these, one on my MB Pro, & one on my XP Machine. The firewire 800 is good enough 2 render video 2 without problems. They have been running 4 several months & have had no problems. I have shared folders on them 2 my network, & have had no problem watching movies off of them over the network. They have single drive versions of this now, & maybe that is why the price has come down almost a hundred bucks. FYI, the drive comes formated 4 MACs. It gives you instructions on how 2 format it 4 Windows.

I bought this a couple months ago 2 use with my Intel MacBook Pro & have had no problems of any kind. The drives run cool, the fan is quiet, the Firewire 800 is blazing fast, & it spins up very quickly. I set it up 4 RAID 1 4 redundancy & best data protection (which obviously cuts your storage space in half 2 500 GB, as some buyers apparently didn't realize). The company does not provide very good instructions as 2 how 2 change from the default RAID 0 setting 2 RAID 1, but there is a great review below by J. Thompson that provides excellent, easy instructions. I am so pleased with this drive I will probably buy another soon.

I bought an Iomega UltraMax Double 640 Gig drive, & the drive was dicey from the get-go.... with a wierd booting sequence that always made me uncomfortable. I use the drive 4 video editing, but not that often, so the actual hours on the drive were very low. I did, however, have about a month's worth of editing on the drive, when bingo, it failed due 2 the Iomega-made controller card failing. After a huge rigermarole 2 get through 2 their service dept, I learned that they ONLY replace the entire drive, & don't have controller cards available separately. In querying the tech support guy 4 20 minutes, I finally determined that the ONLY way I can get my data off these drives is 2 buy another drive, & use the controller card from that drive 2 fix my own drive. Is this SERIOUSLY lame or what? Clearly, it's indicative of a company that only cares about maximizing profits, not serving customers, & when you're looking 4 a company trust fo storage of your critical data, you'd be a fool 2 deal with a company that operates on this principle.
Iomega used 2 be a good company years ago, but after they were bought by EMC, customer care must have been tossed out the door. EMC did the same 2 another great product, Retrospect, which I had used 4 years & had 2 drop 4 the same reason. Shame on you Iomega & EMC, & fie on all your houses.
