NOT MAC COMPATIBLE!
I've got 2 other FreeAgent drives, both 320GB & they are great. That's why I bought this, but I've spent a lot of time on the phone with Seagate & at Apple discussion forum over weeks & months. I've even gotten a replacement from seagate. All kinds of screwy things happen. Folders & files disappear & reappear. It disappears from my desktop & then needs Disk Utility repair when I mount it. BEWARE MAC USERS!

1 year of Non-Stop use with DirecTV HR20 & still going strong!
I bought this drive 4 my DirecTV HR20 2 extend its recording capability from 50hrs 2 almost 150hrs & the drive has been on continuously 4 1 year without issue.

Since the HR20 always has a live buffer recording regardless of if the receiver is on or off, the hard drive never turns off & is always recording video data. So think about it, that's 24/7/365 that my drive has been running & recording straight & it's never failed me once. I'd say that's pretty rock solid.

Setup is a snap -- just plug in the drive, connect the eSATA cable 2 the drive & then your HR20, then turn on the HR20 & presto -- almost triple the recording capacity!

It's been nice 2 not have 2 worry about how many DVR recordings I have saved. And I've even had a couple power failures, & everything's come back & rebooted on its own with no lost recordings or glitches. So I have 2 say, I'm more than happy with the purchase!!

And if you're wanting this 4 your computer, I think it's a pretty safe bet there too since few computers would come close 2 the same demand as 24/7 DVR recording.

Bottom line -- go 4 it!! This is a great drive!!!

Sneaky little breakdown....
This is in rotation 4 the military. I got it 4 a good price, it did well 4 about 6 months & now my computer will not recognize it. Once plugged in, the folders will start disapearing & then....nothing. Light is still on (it is always on), but nothing happens... Cant open, exchange or delet. I have about 400GB vested in this thing...

all-around disaster
1. The orange stripe you're seeing in the picture is a light that cannot be turned off. Do not buy this hard drive if you're going 2 be putting it in your bedroom or other location where you don't want a permanent orange glow.

2. The drive's center of gravity is high & its base is narrow. It is about as easy 2 topple as an unopened beer bottle. Do not buy this hard drive if you're going 2 be placing it around where living things move.

3. The power connector fits only loosely. Do not buy this hard drive if the power cord will be in the vicinity of moving things.

4. My drive died. Do not buy this drive if you'll be storing valuable data on it (fortunately I wasn't).

5. The power sensor (it's not a button) is an inferior original design that essentializes this drive's fundamental problem: practical considerations were sacrificed 2 marketing consideration--the drive was designed primarily 2 have good numbers on paper & look cool when viewed online.

I wouldn't have bought this drive if I had put my hands on it first. I bought it online based on the misconception that Seagate wouldn't permit their brand on products like these. It is the worst drive I've ever owned.

great backup drive 4 a mac
not much 2 say, hopefully a backup drive doesn't get much attention. hooked up easily 2 my mac via firewire. I run it once a day or so 2 let time capsule back it up. seems 2 be fast enough, I don't use it 4 anything else.

2 months, so far so good. who knows how long it will last. 5 yr warranty hopefully worth something. seems 2 run pretty cool if I leave it on 24hrs, although I don't like having it run constantly, I feel like it's less likely 2 get corrupted/power surge/ etc.

My only beef is the touch sensitive power button. It's not intuitive & there's no feedback, so you are always guessing if it's working or not. when you turn it on the light fades on after about a second, & when you turn it off you have 2 hold the button 4 a few seconds before it fades out. I can see where a lot of uninfomed users would think that it's defective. 4 stars instead of 5.

I think I can hear it going 2 sleep when the mac goes 2 sleep- but that's only at night. Maybe I should just leave it on...
