Great Laptop, but HP quality problems
The laptop works great, BUT the 1st one I received had a bad video driver & I needed 2 get a replacement one. Now, 3 months later the battery will not charge & needs 2 be replaced. It's all under warranty, but the still a hassle. HP has chat available 4 support which is way superior than trying 2 deal with the phone with accents & all. Amazon has also been wonderful throughout this ordeal.

As 4 the laptop, it runs well, good display, speed.

Everything I Wanted in a Notebook PC
My old Sony notebook, which I had used 4 3 years 4 traveling & general use, was on its last legs, so I went shopping 4 a replacement. I have not really kept up with computer reviews as I used 2 years ago, so I just looked 4 a new notebook with the features I wanted & hoped the computer would be reliable & live up 2 expectations.

I ended up with the HP Pavilion dv6375us. I have only had it 4 one full day, but I have explored most of its features & found it 2 be a winner, at least 4 my particular needs. Overall, its construction seems solid & its appearance is fine, not too plasticky or fragile. The 15.4 inch screen has a widescreen configuration that provides plenty of space 2 show videos, pictures, & general files. The picture is clear & sharp, though I've had a little trouble figuring out the best viewing angle. The brightness does vary as I tilt the screen, but it's very easy 2 see from any reasonable angle, it just varies a bit.

The Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7200 gives a crisp feel of speed, & the 5400 rpm 160GB hard drive seems 2 load files quickly. The 160GB figure doesn't take into account the fact that there is a recovery partititon that takes up about 16GB or so, so you could recover your files without using a recovery disk. There is an option 4 deleting the recovery partitiion from the hard drive, 2 gain back the gigabytes that partition eats up.

The sound system is better than average 4 a notebook, since the computer has Altec Lansing speakers built in. They're small ones, of course, & there is no subwoofer, so bass is still lacking, but the sound is pretty decent.

One nice feature is a set of controls 4 volume, mute, & playing DVDs or CDS, right above the keyboard, so you don't have 2 use software 4 all of those functions if you don't want to. You can just press the mute button & instantly mute the sound, 4 example. Also, one feature I really like is that a small remote control comes with the computer, so you can control the playing of a DVD & some other functions, such as advancing the slides in a PowerPoint presentation.

And, 2 go one step further, in line with this computer being marketed as an "Entertainment" notebook, it comes with a TV tuner card that fits into the ExpressCard slot on the right side. That card comes with cables that let you connect 2 your cable TV service with coaxial cable, or 2 a satellite box with video cables, or even use a small, included, off-the-air antenna. I hooked that system up with no problems 2 my cable service, and, using the Windows Media Center feature of the Vista Home Premium operating system (included with the PC), I had no problems getting TV reception & recording & playing back programs using the digital video recorder functions. And, 4 that hookup, there is ANOTHER remote control -- a much bigger, full-size Windows Media Center remote. I have 2 say I am slightly confused as 2 which remote does what better, but both remotes worked fine. The big remote lets you select the TV channel guide, start & stop recording, playback, fast forward, etc. It has numbers 2 enter channel numbers, & other functions.

The touchpad is fairly standard; I like it better than some other touchpads I have used. The surface is very smooth. The feature I like best is that there is a vertical scroll area on the right, which lets you scroll your screen up & down, like the scroll wheel on a conventional mouse. That function works well, & is very convenient.

The computer is quite well-equipped with ports; there are 3 USB ports, a VGA-out port, firewire, audio 3.5mm ports 4 headphones & microphone, as well as an SPDIF audio port. Also, as I mentioned earlier, an ExpressCard slot. So far, the included TV tuner is the only thing I know that goes in that slot, but there must be other accessories available 4 it, either now or in the future. There is also a built-in media reader 4 SD cards, Memory Sticks, & other small media cards, but not 4 CompactFlash. There also is no PCI Card slot. But, with the USB ports, you can plug in a USB media reader if you need one 4 CompactFlash. There also is an S-video out port, so you can show a DVD or other video on a TV set, & not just on a computer monitor. That's a fairly rare feature, & nice 2 have.

The included DVD drive reads & writes & re-writes CDs & DVDs, including Dual Layer DVDs. It also has Lightscribe 4 putting monochrome graphics & text on Lightscribe CDs & DVDs. I played some DVDs, & they worked fine, with no pauses or stuttering. That drive is somewhat noisy with its whirring up 2 speed, but I don't think that's too unusual.

The included AC adaptor is a standard-sized power brick with cords going 2 the computer & the AC outlet. The included standard 6-cell battery does not have great endurance; I would say up 2 two hours, maybe. I have ordered an optional 12-cell battery so I can get longer use without plugging into the AC power.

Also, this notebook comes with nVidia GeForce Go 7400 graphics card, with 128MB graphics memory. This supposedly will give enhanced 3D performance 4 games. I'm not really a gamer, so I don't know how much difference that makes, but the graphics performance 4 DVD watching & normal screens has been quick & fine so far.

There is probably more "bloatware" included with the computer than most people would want, such as free trials 4 AOL, etc. It also has Microsoft Office 2007 installed in a 60-day trial version, which lets you pay 2 unlock the full version when the trial is done. Otherwise, Microsoft Works is included, as well as some graphics & other programs that I don't plan 2 use.

The built-in wireless networking worked fine with no problems so far, & there is a port 4 ethernet network connection also, as well as a modem 4 phone line connection.

All in all, I usually get a pretty accurate gut reaction 2 a new computer fairly fast, leading 2 me return them 2 the store on several occasions in the past. I plan 2 keep this one, though. This particular model has all the features & performance I need, & has a very nice appearance & feel, without breaking my budget. As of now, I highly recommend it.
