For MAC newbies

I can't review the specs of the machine I will leave it 2 the experts but I will discuss what happened after my MAC broke down.

The experience:

My computer started 2 act up I tried 2 troubleshoot the problem on apple.com. After a few days of the "self IT help", I took it 2 the Apple store during lunch. I was asked if I had an appointment. I was told 2 take it 2 another Apple store they were too busy. Finally with some understanding that my $1,500 computer had problems & that it didn't matter if it was at home or at the store 4 a week they let me drop it off. A Genius tech was able 2 put in a test part until replacement parts came into the Apple store. Note: on the form that you sign a potential $100 charge may apply 2 your service.

The appointment:

They got the parts in & I made an appointment. An appointment doesn't mean immediate help but possibly around your appointed time on a shared basis with another person that has an appointment too 4 the IPhone or IPOD. Translation more waiting time.

As a user my preference:

Let me know that as a Genius you may delete something that I did not save. I lost my favorites on Safari. Fortunately, I was able 2 figure out that if I go 2 my trash I will find the bookmark.plist file & restore my bookmarks.

Apple store please let me tell you my computer problems & fix it having the choice 2 leave it over your preference of me making an appointment.

Scratching my head over Apple's strategy:

They have the sales strategy down 2 a science, but the backend support needs an overhaul. Why do they think it is value added 2 have the potential new customers of their products stand & wait with people having problems. From my experience at lunch time & during the evening the wait could be long & frustrating.

Final- As a PC user interfacing with the MAC is great.

nice package, but very unreliable
I thought I'd try the alternative 2 Windows machines, & it's been a big disappointment. While the MacBook is sleek & sexy, it's also extremely unreliable; the operating system crashes at least every day. Apple pumps out OS updates on a regular basis, but nothing has improved this crash-prone white elephant. It crashes much more frequently than my recent Windows machines, which says a lot, since Windows is none too trustworthy.

That said, I like the physical layout, the size & weight, & the Mac applications. If only they worked all the time--or even more of the time, I'd say they have a superior product. But, unhappily, it just ain't so.

I loved it the first 6 months... & then...
I bought my macbook in Europe, where the price was more than one bought in the states, about $400 more. I had been a Windows user & got tired of all of Windows' Windowsness. I got my beautiful MacBook in pearly white & had a great time with the programs. No crashes! Then three months passed, of which the macbook did nothing but sit on my desk, & part of the casing chipped off. I took it in 2 be fixed. One month later, ANOTHER part of the casing chipped off. I had that fixed. The casing REGULARLY chips off. It now looks like an old hand me down laptop that has been banged up by trolls & it has not left my office.

Six months after purchase, it overheats. I mean overheats in one hour of use. I can no longer use it as a laptop without worrying about setting something on fire.

One year later (right now) it is propped up on blocks (coolers) with the ENTIRE casing that goes under the wrist chipped away, another piece of casing in the upper right corner chipped away & I am frantically backing up everything so that when my whole laptop dies in the next 20 minutes as I expect it to, I won't lose everything.

Basically, I believe Apple makes great ideas, put inside cheap pieces of crap.

I HATE going back 2 Windows, but it seems I must.

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor

10>

MacBooks come with an Apple remote & preloaded Front Row media playback software.
The Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 processor has a 2.2 GHz processor speed, super-fast 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB), & an enormous 4 MB of Smart Cache, an L2 cache that can be shared between the cores as needed. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; & a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU & RAM, & a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core 2 Duo's 128-bit SSE3 vector engine handles 128-bit computations in a single clock cycle, accelerating data manipulation by simultaneously applying a single instruction 2 multiple data. And its two execution cores are designed 2 share resources & conserve power, helping it 2 achieve higher levels of performance since it uses fewer watts. And with 4MB of shared L2 cache, the MacBook is a multi-tasking monster. With such substantial L2 cache, data & instructions can be kept close 2 the two processor cores, greatly increasing performance & allowing the entire system 2 work more efficiently. And, because the processor cores share the L2 cache, either can use the entire amount if the other happens 2 be idle.

Hard Drive & Memory
The 120 GB Serial-ATA (SATA) hard drive (5400 RPM) quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin 2 FireWire & USB 2.0. The 1 GB of PC5300 DDR2 RAM (two SO-DIMMs of 512 MB) have an industry-leading 667 MHz speed, & the RAM capacity can be increased 2 a whopping 4 GB.

Wireless Connectivity
The built-in 802.11n wireless networking provides up 2 five times the performance & twice the range of 802.11g, but it's also backward-compatible with 802.11a/b/g routers, enabling you 2 communicate with the a wide variety of Wi-Fi resources. It works seamlessly with the new AirPort Extreme with 802.11n. Use the built-in Bluetooth wireless technology 2 connect 2 your PDA or cell phone, synchronize addresses, or download pictures from your cell phone. You can also use a wireless headset 4 iChat audio chats & VoIP calls as well as quickly share files with a colleague.

Display & Graphics
Whether you're working on a Keynote presentation or watching a movie before you catch a flight, every document, video, & photo on your MacBook will look sharp on the glossy 13.3-inch widescreen display. With pixel-perfect 1280-by-800 resolution, it's great 4 viewing & working with media. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, which provides 144 MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory. It features Intel Clear Video Technology, which delivers outstanding video playback with sharper image quality, increased clarity, & enhanced visual quality of interlaced content on progressive displays.

Video Conferencing with Built-in iSight
Artfully placed in the display bezel is an iSight camera, which enables easy video conferencing as well as allows you 2 snap pictures of yourself & create video podcasts. Using the iChat AV application, video conferencing is integrated into your iChat buddy list, so initiating a video conference is a breeze. iChat also lets you hold audio chats with up 2 10 people & provides high-quality audio compression & full-duplex sound so conversation can flow naturally. For video podcasting, you can record a short clip using the iSight camera, then use iWeb 2 create a video blog entry or post your GarageBand-recorded podcast.

Apple Innovations

The magnetically connected MagSafe power adapter breaks cleanly away, without damage 2 either the cord or the MacBook, if you trip over the cord.
One of Apple's most celebrated innovations is the MagSafe power adapter connector with offers a magnetic connection instead of a physical one. So, if you happen 2 trip over a power cord, you won't send MacBook flying off a table or desk--the cord simply disconnects, without damage 2 either the cord or the system. As an added nicety, this means less wear on the connectors.

The trackpad can tell if you've got one finger on the pedal, or two. With two, you can easily scroll around your documents or open contextual menus. When you need right-click functionality, simply open ÒKeyboard & MouseÓ in System Preferences & enable the secondary click preference.

And with the included Apple Remote & Front Row software, you can show off your latest photos & access your iTunes music & playlists from across the room. You can also use it 2 watch downloaded movies & TV episodes as well as control playback of DVD movies. The Apple Remote features a minimalist six buttons--just press the Menu button 2 activate Front Row & begin 2 navigate through your media. You can even use the remote 2 control Keynote presentations in iWork '06.
