I must say I was hesitant about opening the package after reading some of these reviews on the WD MyBook, but what the heck I thought. I can always return it. It is amazingly small & quiet. I unpacked it & plugged it in 2 my Linksys Router. It booted, picked up an IP address & became visible 2 all my computers. No passwords or user accounted needed. I just drag & drop my files. It's pretty fast at 100 MB, so I am happy with the speed. I expect it 2 be faster when I upgrade 2 a gig Ethernet switch.
I have 4 systems (3 xp & 1 vista) on my home network & all of them can map a drive 2 it does exactly what I expect it 2 do...be a network drive 2 store pictures, software, files, etc.
The sharing over the internet is of no interest 2 me. My router is locked down 2 prevent any incoming requests.
I'm a happy camper with this especially after paying only $219 at Best Buy.
Rating: 2 of 5 Great Slowness
Its so SLOW.
This product is great - I setup it up 4 my mac, super easy.
Would not have bought it if I really realized how *slow* it was.
Rating: 3 of 5 Don't Recommend Included Software!
Just attach this drive 2 your network & figure out the IP address the drive is using (typically 192.168.0.x). Then in your web browser type in the IP address (mine is http:\\192.168.0.10) 2 access the built-in interface. It's easy from here. (The instructions tell you that you MUST load their software--not true.)
Other than the pain of figuring out the above, the drive is adequate. I didn't check the speed before purchase--but it's OK 4 my small home network.

I bought this at Best Buy 4 back-up files. My computer has 2.3TB of available drive space with 1.9T of that in use. As you can see, there's not much space left over 4 back-ups. All ports on the computer are used when I work so an Ethernet drive made sense as I still had 2 ports unused on the 8 port switch. Here are my Pros & Cons 4 it:
Pros.....None
Cons.....Difficult 2 setup the software, Software requires keys that you must purchase within 30 days (Trial versions included), It is infinitely slow, the drive only comes in white, & it is extremely slow.
Have I mentioned how slow it is? A 900GB(ish) backup transfer 2 the drive has been running 4 over 24hrs. & is still not halfway done. Sure it can run in the background but I don't leave my computer on over night & the software won't finish an interrupted file, it jumps 2 the next file.
As you guessed, it goes back 2 the store or through a window.
Rating:1 of 5 WD Lost a Company!
Down & dirty - 2 the point: if one is self-employed, do not buy this drive as a backup or remote access!
I am disabled & work mostly from home. This drive DROPPED/CRASHED my computer 4 two days - $10k (U.S. dollar) lost from this drive.
On the upside, it does make a good bookend. The problem is MioNet! One cannot use the drive (to the fullest extent) without giving into many a headache. MioNet is a joke, WD - I am tired of being passed around between techs, & I HAD a contract 4 service with them.
As a background, I have a server room in my house with over 10TB of drive & had 2 expand, just 4 temp files (as a Safety Engineer). For personal use, please do not even consider. Private Company/Consultant, well being down 4 two days not only cost me a deadline, but it almost crashed all my other data.
I have a static IP 4 global access & review by clients. I thought this drive would help (my past WD's are running strong). MioNet was the worst thing WD could have made as proprietary on the drive.
For personal use, I recommend stacking stolid state drive on a main router. For professional use, I state the same - one may fork out the dollar 4 it, but my laptop drive (solid state) is more stable than this drive.
Just beware...
Add this unique remote-access storagesystem 2 your wired or wireless network & you'll have a surprisingly simple & secure way 2 access & share data & photos at home, in the office, & anywhere in the world- even when your local computer is off.
