SanDisk SDCZ28-004G-A11 4GB Ultra Cruzer Titanium Plus USB Flash Drive (Bronze)

Sadly I have washed & dried the 4GB Titanium flash drive twice. I got really upset the first time as I thought there goes a wasted investment. To my surprise it worked as if nothing happened at all. In short the drive is a life saver & it's very durable. The one problem I had was that the slide out contact sometimes doesn't lock properly & you have 2 fidget with it 2 get it 2 slide/lock into the USB port correctly.

Bought this device as I was thinking it would be another easy-to-use SanDisk product. I guess it does fulfill the basic function you expect from a memory stick; HOWEVER two things are hugely annoying: 1) When you plug in the device 4 the first time, you receive a message that it has been installed successfully. Yet, the device does not identify itself with a name; so if you have several removable USB storage devices hooked up at the same time (also not specifically identified) then the guessing game begins. I wanted a simple back-up memory stick - why do I have 2 click on/push fifteen buttons 2 find out where 2 drag the data to, & how 2 safely remove the hardware before unplugging it ...?
Very annoying & NOT AT ALL customer friendly -as other reviewers have remarked before me- are the constant reminders 2 sign-up 4 the online features. (It'll be a cold day in hell when I trust an online site with my personal data ...!!!)
In short: I'm thinking about returning it - too annoying & too much hassle, even 4 $40 (which is what I still paid 4 it).

EXCELLENT PRODUCT FOR THE COST

I am very impressed with this usb drive. The titanium skin is as tough as advertised. When I bought it, I didn't even know about the backup service available. The tough thing about having valuable info on a flash drive like this is that if you lose the drive, your info is gone. This drive comes with an online backup service, so that if you lose the drive, you can replace it & get all your info back right away. It performs as well as any drive I have owned, & now I am not worried if I were 2 lose it, except that I probably not lose it due 2 how great it looks & feels, I check 4 it all the time, & its always there.

The Titanium Plus operates as a standard flash drive - no Launchpad user interface, no drive password, no hardware data encryption, if you select "No" 2 the initial prompt when you first connect the drive 2 a USB port.

If you select "Yes", the Launchpad interface will be installed. You then have the Launchpad user interface, & the capability 2 password the drive. But you will also be inundated with prompts 2 complete the registration 4 the on-line back-up service. Once installed, you cannot disable the on-line back-up service in the setup/configuration 4 Launchpad, contrary 2 what the FAQ page on the Sandisk website 4 the Titanium Plus suggests. The cost of the service after the 6 free months is not provided. I would not trust personal data 2 an on-line Website anyway, even encrypted - look at the Microsoft ".Net Passport" fiasco, their database with people's personal information was hacked into multiple times.

It appears Sandisk is attempting 2 force users into subscribing 2 the Sandisk on-line back-up service, unless you're willing 2 use the drive without any advanced features. And what's 2 stop Sandisk from making all their older drives behave this way when you innocently submit 2 a software/firmware update?

Time 2 switch 2 another USB drive brand.
