All that it advertised 2 be
LaCie 301833 Rugged All-Terrain 320 GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive
Item was delivered quickly. I am using the drive 2 backup a MACbook w/ a 10.1xx operating system. Installation was simple quick an easy. Operates via USB without any external source power required. It is light & compact enough 2 be carried in my relatively small computer case carrier. I am well pleased & highly recommend this product.

totally cute, but totally doesn't work
I purchased this beautiful orange hard drive, but it was never recognized by my Mac, & then I read in online forums that LOTS of other people have had this problem. Whether it's the cable or something else, I still don't know, but the damn thing should be tested before it gets shipped out!

Waste of money
I bought this product believing the LaCie drive would work with my Powerbook G4 (circa '03). This belief was based on the LaCie website's assertions of the device's "Mac compatibility", its ability 2 function with both the modern USB 2.0 & the ancient USB 1.1 (which I needed), my past experiences with LaCie being a reliable choice, & my own observations of the "Genius Bar" (insert laugh) staff at The Apple Store using this exact model.

As soon as I got the drive, I immediately plugged it in & waited. And waited. I realized I could hear (what I can only describe as) an electronic "whirring" sound. I investigated the issue using the semi-helpful troubleshooting on the LaCie website, & ultimately determined that my computer wasn't "strong" enough 2 power both itself & the drive. I would need 2 purchase a separate power adapter, from LaCie, 2 plug into the wall & thus power up the hard drive that way. But what's another $20, right? I grudgingly purchased the adapter off the website.

This time, when I plugged the drive in, using the adapter, the drive icon immediately appeared on the desktop. It seemed 2 work perfectly, made no noises, & I began using it 2 store TV shows, movies, & other documents.

1 week later, I attempted 2 plug the drive into our other computer: an '08 Mac Mini. The drive did not appear on the desktop and, when I proceeded 2 use the drive with the power adapter (thinking that maybe, somehow, an '08 Mac was STILL not powerful enough 2 power up the drive on its own), it still did not appear. I wasn't immensely concerned until I next proceeded 2 plug the drive back into my laptop where it had, mind you, been working without incident since I added the power adapter. This time, the drive did not appear on the desktop, & hasn't since then. Instead, I hear an electronic "clicking" (sounds slightly different than the other previous "whirring"). Imagine my shock when I did a little more internet research & found postings from tons of other people like me, on various forums, who had the same problems with this drive model.

Naturally, the troubleshooting information on the LaCie website was completely useless. Remembering that the device had a warranty only if it had been registered within 30 days of purchase, I did register the drive & received an email back advising me 2 try any number of things, none of which included sending me a replacement. I will try what was suggested, but am not really hopeful.

On a positive note, the drive is most likely capable of withstanding repeated throws against the wall, due 2 its trendy yet rugged orange exterior.

Looks good!
I am currently serving in the US Army in Iraq & wanted a durable, portable hard drive 2 back up my computer. I narrowed it down 2 the few brands that are "rugged". I bought it & after getting it, it looks like it will serve my needs perfectly. It is quiet & decently fast 4 transfer rates.

Warning: It does need two USB slots 2 run well. But it does run well.
