Acer Laptop Review
Acer Laptop with 6 cell battery works wonderfully. It's small portability makes it an attractive addition 2 your technology collection. The laptop is fully functioning without the DVD/CD drive. However, with a little technology know-how, you can copy your CD contents onto a flash drive & utilize that in place of a CD. The battery lasts very long & the keyboard is the right size 4 its compact abilities.

No More Research Needed!
I can save many of you several hours of research, confusion & uncertainty if you are thinking about purchasing this "netbook". It should be in a 'mini-laptop' category since that is essentially what it is. Purchased on Amazon at the current price, is a GREAT deal. Keep in mind this is only 8.9" & takes some getting used to. The keyboard, although smaller, took almost no time at all 2 master. The boot up & shut down times are less than a minute. There are a few really great blogs out there with a TON of helpful information on getting the best performance out of this machine.

The clarity & brightness are great. Speakers are basically 4 browsing only. The font size IS smaller than you are probably accustomed 2 but with one click 2 125%, it is as good as any other laptop. We really disliked packing the 15" laptop on any long day trips or weekends but this will go with us everywhere without hesitation.

The 6-cell battery DOES last the full 6 hours which is a HUGE HUGE plus 4 travel. I know it looks small & 'plastic-y' but it feels solid when you open/close/carry it. I strongly suggest purchasing one of the suggested neoprene sleeves & a memory card. Getting this in White would also be a good idea. This shell is a fingerprint magnet, much like a Nintendo DS system but the white hides it well. Lastly, the wifi works incredibly. Picked up our signal & every wireless connection on the block within a few seconds. Not a single problem so far. Great machine!

One Pain After Another
I purchased a new Aspire 5100 & it broke within 8 months of normal use. Dealing with Tech Support was a nightmare. I have, all told, spent over 12 hours on the phone with those people, mostly waiting on hold. First, all repairs are done in Texas & the expense 2 send broken items lies with the customer. They repaired it, returned it 2 me, & it had an entirely new set of problems. I sent it back. They repaired it, returned it 2 me, & on day 89 of the 90 day warranty it broke again. This was on a Saturday when Tech support is closed. I called on Monday & they claimed that the warranty had expired but that they would look at it if I first paid them $400 up front 4 "out of warranty service" & shipped it Texas yet again.

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! BE SURE TO PURCHASE A PRODUCT THAT HAS A RELIABLE AND DECENT SUPPORT TEAM AND POLICY.

Exceeded expectations
I was so pleasantly surprised by the "beefed-up" Aspire with XP, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD & large battery pack, that what began as an information gathering exercise turned into an impulse buy. For the first time in memory - I haven't had a moment of buyers remorse from this particular impulse purchase.
I do not have small hands, yet I found the very compact keyboard easy 2 use. The compromises over a full sized notebook are quite minimal considering the much more compact form factor.
I found the atom processor much less sluggish than expected - that may have 2 do with the generous amount of RAM in this particular configuration. I still won't be editing videos or playing graphics intensive games, but 4 basic cloud computing - including streaming video - it seems totally up 2 the task.
Since I often use it in noisy environments - trains, coffeeshops etc - the reported fan noise has never been an issue 4 me. Perhaps because it is replacing a much noiser & vastly underpowered older notebook, I see nothing but upside 2 my purchase.
I also found the WiFi 2 be much more sensitive than my old notebook, so connectivity is far less troublesome with the Aspire. The large battery pack yields far more life than I'm used to. Upwards of 5 hours, where my old mobile Athlon based notebook would be unlikely 2 last 90minutes.
Perhaps my standards are too low 2 offer a critical review, but all I can offer are my experiences & opinion. For me, this little netbook has been the most positive mobile experience I've yet had.
I've also started accessorizing it with items like a USB DTV tuner, & GPS receiver. This seems 2 be a case where having XP is a plus - though I'm considering adding Linux & a bootloader. I've had the Aspire 4 about a month & the "owners delight" has yet 2 wear off.

I received mine yesterday (1/8/09) & it took about 10 minutes 2 set up before I was on line. It is easy 2 use, even 4 someone like me who is NOT very good with setting computers up. I am glad I purchased this computer.
